Although the post season technically has not started for the Viking Wrestling Team, the Vikings believe something entirely different. The Vikings motto for the remainder of the season is “5 Week Freaks.” The meaning is simple, there are 5 weeks remaining this season leading up to the state finals. All wrestlers are focused on 3 things for the next 5 weeks; school, family, and wrestling. We started this season with 45 wrestlers and throughout the season we have weeded that number down to 25 warriors. Those 25 that remain truly represent Viking Nation the way it is suppose to be!
Last night these 25 warriors went to battle with district rival LBJ. It was LBJ’s senior night and the vikings went to LBJ with one purpose; to run people out.
The Vikings did exactly that. The lady vikings started the night off with a bang. Every lady viking that wrestled won and earned 6 points for the Vikings. It was raining pins last night as the Lady Vikings won all 6 matches wrestled by pin, the remaining 3 matches were won by forfeit. Isabella Llamas, Leilah Jiminez, Jamaria Washington, Jasmine Byson, Angie Miranda, Kyara Zacarias, Koda Camrena, and Selena Cordell all picked up wins for the ladies. LBJ’s lone win against the lady vikings was collected on a void (we did not have a wrestler at that weight). The match ended with a final score of 54-6. The Lady Vikings finish district competition undefeated on the season, 7-0.
The Viking boys followed the girls in the dual at LBJ. The boys wrestled tough tonight and came out with a bang. The boys won 4 of the 6 matches wrestled. All by pin and in dominating fashion! In fact, all 4 of those wins came from wrestlers bumping up a weight class (wrestling 1 weight class higher than they weighed in). Nixon Ochoa, Maykel Naranjo, Elijah Solano, and Jaime Gallarado all picked up pins for the boys. Although the boys won more matches than LBJ, they lost the dual due to an inability to fill weight classes. We voided 6 weight classes last night (106, 170, 182, 195, 220, 285). That’s a total of 36 points we give to other teams every time we wrestle as a boys team. Sacrificing those 36 points the boys lost the dual 24-45. The boys team is young and give their best effort each and everyday. I am extremely proud of these boys. They have not had the success of the girls, but they have progressed throughout the season as much as any team I have ever coached.
I am calling out the rest of Viking Nation! In the spring, get off the couch and do something. Hard work and commitment will lead to success. The 25 wrestlers who committed to success this season are truly having it. The rest of Viking Nation… well you are missing out.
Thank you for your continued support Vikings. Check out the Vikings next Wednesday at Leander Glenn as our regular season continues to wind down.
