Multiple Teams · Lady Vikes Cruise to 6-1 Victory Over Travis Rebels

The Lady Vikings soccer team cruised to an easy 6-1 victory over Travis High School on Saturday morning at the Burger Annex stadium.  The ladies were in complete control of the game from start to finish and really put together a true team effort.  Sammy Mendoza lit up the Rebels with 2 goals, also assisting on two more.  Diana Ramirez played a big roll as well by knocking in two goals in the first half.  Cindy Moreno also contributed with a goal of her own on a beautiful assist from up and coming freshman speedster Mercedes Blancarte.  Lisbet Rivera also slotted home a goal in the second half.  Though she didn’t see much action, Maria Salgado was once again a rock in goal and captained her defense.  Iris Sifuentes and Iris Aguilar also made some major contributions playing defense in the back.  This was a great team win and will hopefully give the ladies some momentum in district play.  Please congratulate them when you see them on their dominating performance.

The Lady Vikes will look to make it two in a row with a contest against rival Reagan High on Wednesday night at 7:45 at House Park.  Come out and support!

Coed Junior Varsity Wrestling, Coed Varsity Wrestling · Lanier Flexes their Muscle!

Although the post season technically has not started for the Viking Wrestling Team, the Vikings believe something entirely different. The Vikings motto for the remainder of the season is “5 Week Freaks.” The meaning is simple, there are 5 weeks remaining this season leading up to the state finals. All wrestlers are focused on 3 things for the next 5 weeks; school, family, and wrestling. We started this season with 45 wrestlers and throughout the season we have weeded that number down to 25 warriors. Those 25 that remain truly represent Viking Nation the way it is suppose to be!

Last night these 25 warriors went to battle with district rival LBJ. It was LBJ’s senior night and the vikings went to LBJ with one purpose; to run people out.

The Vikings did exactly that. The lady vikings started the night off with a bang. Every lady viking that wrestled won and earned 6 points for the Vikings. It was raining pins last night as the Lady Vikings won all 6 matches wrestled by pin, the remaining 3 matches were won by forfeit. Isabella Llamas, Leilah Jiminez, Jamaria Washington, Jasmine Byson, Angie Miranda, Kyara Zacarias, Koda Camrena, and Selena Cordell all picked up wins for the ladies. LBJ’s lone win against the lady vikings was collected on a void (we did not have a wrestler at that weight). The match ended with a final score of 54-6. The Lady Vikings finish district competition undefeated on the season, 7-0.

The Viking boys followed the girls in the dual at LBJ. The boys wrestled tough tonight and came out with a bang. The boys won 4 of the 6 matches wrestled. All by pin and in dominating fashion! In fact, all 4 of those wins came from wrestlers bumping up a weight class (wrestling 1 weight class higher than they weighed in). Nixon Ochoa, Maykel Naranjo, Elijah Solano, and Jaime Gallarado all picked up pins for the boys.  Although the boys won more matches than LBJ, they lost the dual due to an inability to fill weight classes. We voided 6 weight classes last night (106, 170, 182, 195, 220, 285). That’s a total of 36 points we give to other teams every time we wrestle as a boys team. Sacrificing those 36 points the boys lost the dual 24-45. The boys team is young and give their best effort each and everyday. I am extremely proud of these boys. They have not had the success of the girls, but they have progressed throughout the season as much as any team I have ever coached.

I am calling out the rest of Viking Nation! In the spring, get off the couch and do something. Hard work and commitment will lead to success. The 25 wrestlers who committed to success this season are truly having it. The rest of Viking Nation… well you are missing out.

Thank you for your continued support Vikings. Check out the Vikings next Wednesday at Leander Glenn as our regular season continues to wind down.

Game Recap

Lanier beat Reagan 3-0 to open district play with a big win. Danny Vargas opened the scoring just minutes before halftime by finishing off a move started by Shelove Dorsainvil winning possession near his own goal and galloping forward 60 yards before feeding Vargas down the side. The striker still had a lot of work to do as he found himself shooting for the top corner from an acute angle, but his blasted shot caromed of both goal posts before rolling over the line to give Lanier a 1-0 lead at half time.

The second half began at a frantic pace with both teams creating chances to score. Lanier broke through again though when Edgar Mejia beat his marker down the left side and dribbled to the byline riding the challenge of a defender. Mejia unselfishly picked out Vargas with a beautiful cutback that was again finished clinically to make the scoreline 2-0.

Central defender Michael Varela claimed the third goal scored from a Mario Gomez corner kick. The inviting service found Varela in the six yard box, and Michael’s goal bound effort then ricocheted off a helpless defender on it’s way into the net.

Felix Santana will be proud of his defense for keeping a clean sheet, and Edwin Arteaga also performed will in a cameo appearance at Keeper to preserve the shutout.

Coed Junior Varsity Wrestling, Coed Varsity Wrestling · Vikings Show Depth!

This past weekend the Lanier Wrestling Team (boys and girls varsity) headed to the Delco Center once more for a clash of central and southern Texas teams. The boys participated in a dual tournament and the girls wrestled in an individual tournament.

The Lady Vikings stepped up big this weekend and showed how much depth the girls team truly has. With four starters out this weekend for state testing, injuries, and family emergencies, the Lady Viking still went to battle. Several back ups stepped up big and helped the short staffed Lady Vikings finish 2nd Overall!

Isabella Llamas continued her stellar junior season finishing the day 3-0  (26-6 season) and winning the 95 lbs. weight class. Eboni Washington, typically a back-up to her older sister stepped up big at 119 lbs. She went 2-2 on the day and took home a 4th place finish. Jasmine Byson (128 lbs.) went 3-1 on the day and secured her first medal of the season finishing 3rd! Angie Miranda (138 lbs) dominated her competition finishing all of her matches with pins and secured her first championship of the season!

Leilah Jiminez, Maryjane Guerra, Kyara Zacaraias, all also picked up key wins and showed the teams depth. All of the girls contributed to the teams 2nd place finish!

McCallum Duals GirlsMcCallum Invite

The boys went to battle this weekend in a series of round table matches. Senior Captain Maykel Naranjo lead the way for the boys avenging two of his earlier losses this season. Maykel is now 20-5 on the season and is looking better each week!

Senior Adolfo Soto also had a big weekend finishing 3-1 on the day. Soto an on and off again starter, stepped in and showed he has earned a right to remain a starter for the boys team.

Nixon Ochoa, Khile Shores, Alejandro Soto, and Roderick Ellison, also all picked up wins this weekend.

This  boys team dual record is now 5-4-1 on the season.

With only three dual matches remaining before District Finals, the Vikings program is gearing up for a big post season push!

Thanks for your support Viking Nation!
