Girls Junior Varsity Softball, Girls Varsity Softball · THE GREAT COMEBACK. Viks 31, Raiders 27

Inspired by the Super Bowl comeback, the Lady Vikings produced a comeback for the ages. After a rough start, and being down by 11 runs after the 1st 2 innings, the ladies buckled down and worked for the 5 remaining innings. As the sun went down, the cool breeze settled in, bringing calmness led by Junior, Leann Little’s 3 consecutive outs into the 3rd inning, and led to shutting the Raiders’ offense down for the remainder of the game.

The chilly night also consisted of an outstanding, consistent offense that the Raiders could not quiet down for 7 innings. Our offense was led by Senior, Celeste Aviles’ 7 RBI’s and Junior, Marisol Godina’s 6 RBI’s & INSIDE THE PARK HOMERUN!!

The Lady Vikings would love to thank all parents and fans that came out to support them. That comeback was extra special with them witnessing it on the stands. Next, the ladies will work to tame the Jaguars of LBJ on Tuesday, the 28th at Noack Field at 7. See y’all there!

The Lady Vikings soccer team cruised to an easy 3-0 victory last night over the Travis Rebels of south Austin.  The ladies put on a clinic, showing everyone in attendance how you control possession and capitalize on opportunities when they arrive.  Super star sophomore Diana Ramirez was the MVP of the night with one assist, one goal, and several key tackles and passes.  Cindy Moreno also contributed with a goal of her own on what was a highlight reel worthy play.  Coming on strong late in the season, senior Lisbet Rivera tapped in a goal late to seal the victory.  The defense also held strong all night with impressive tackles and clearances from senior Leslie Estrada, senior Jacqui Chavez, Sophomore Iris Aguilar, and rising freshman Zulli Leyva.  This was a great team win for the girls to get 3 points against a tough opponent.

Come out and support the Lady Vikings on Friday night as they take on the rival Reagan Raiders at 7:45 on Nelson Field.

Coed Junior Varsity Wrestling, Coed Varsity Wrestling · The Trinity is Headed to State!

Happy Never Satisfied. That is the how most of the Lanier wrestlers and coaching staff felt after this weekend’s regional finals competition at the Delco Center. The Vikings wrestling team sent 15 wrestlers to the regional tournament with big goals and aspirations! Although the Vikings gave their best effort many of the Vikings came up just a bit short. The heartbreaking losses will serve as motivation for this young team going into next season.

Of the 15 regional qualifiers, 8 wrestlers made it to day 2 of the regional finals and 5 wrestlers made it to the blood round. The blood round is the round that determines if you qualify for state or not. Youth showed in the blood round, but the coaching staff remains proud of this young teams accomplishments this year! Coach Summerfield and Banda were in agreement, “11 of the 15 regional qualifiers were first year wrestlers. Most of which have only been wrestling for 5 months. The progress this team made over the season is outstanding and one to be proud of. The lady vikings finished 7th in the region overall. A great showing for this young group. The coaching staff is excited about the future!”

A HUGE congratulations to our “Trinity” headed to State. Senior Captain, Selena Cordell lead the way finishing 4-0 on the weekend with 4 pins and a Regional Championship! Selena heads into state as a 1 seed and great position heading into the state tournament. This is Selena’s second trip to the State Finals. Last year she was happy to be there. This year she dreams of Gold!

Junior, Isabella Llamas finished the weekend 3-1 and a 3rd place finish. Isabella overcame a heartbreaking quarterfinals loss and bounced back to win 3 in a row to finish as a state qualifier. Bella won each of her matches by pin and showed true grit battling through the consolation bracket this weekend. This is Bella’s first trip to the State tournament. When asked about going to state Isabella said, “I am going to place! Not just make an appearance!”

Lastly, we have Senior Captain Maykel Naranjo. Maykel finished the weekend with a record of  3-2. This is Maykel’s second trip to the State Tournament. Although, Maykel did not finish where he would have liked, he remains positive and excited about the opportunity to compete at the State tournament once again!

Again, a huge congratulations to the Vikings “Trinity” of State bound wrestlers. Make sure to wish them luck when you see them Viking Nation!

The State Championships will be this coming weekend 2/24-2/25 at the Berry Center in Houston, Texas!

Game Recap

Lanier Boys Soccer began the 2nd round of district play with a tricky Saturday morning fixture against Reagan. Lanier entered the contest unbeaten through six district matches and just two points behind district leaders LBJ. Reagan were struggling in the bottom half of the table but determined to defend their home field on the newly laid turf at Nelson.
The Vikings started brightly and dominated the possession in the opening stages. This period of superiority was punctuated by a Mario Gomez corner kick that Luis Zuniga slammed into the top corner with a bullet header. Lanier were caught napping just minutes later when a Reagan counter attack down the left flank resulted in Felix Santana being chipped with a perfect lob into the side netting.
Lanier would have to settle for a 1-1 score line at half time, but worse than that, they had to face the wrath of assistant coach Foad Idais, who politely expressed his displeasure at the current state of affairs for most of the ten minute intermission. The team was eager to make amends and produce a strong 2nd half performance.
Those reparations began just four minutes into the half when central defender Michael Varela picked out a defense splitting pass to Shelove Dorsainvil who combined with Edgar Mejia before setting up Josue Maldonado streaking forward from his right back position. Josue’s clinical finish into the top corner started an avalanche of goals as the Vikings began to attack in waves.
In the 49th minute Shelove again found time on the ball in the penalty area, and his neat footwork enticed a lunging challenge to earn a penalty kick. Sophomore Juancarlos Hernandez stepped up and held his nerve to score his second penalty in two matches by sending the keeper the wrong way. Later on in the 68th minute Danny Vargas ghosted past his marker on the left wing before crossing to Shelove who unselfishly laid it off to Cristhian Amador to score his second goal in as many games.
In the 75th minute Shelove capped off his man of the match performance with a goal as he raced behind a tired back line onto John Palma’s through ball, rounded the keeper, and continued dribbling into an empty net. The goal closed out a remarkable four goal 2nd half in which the Vikings, and Shelove especially, were simply unplayable.
The 5-1 result allowed Lanier to keep pace with LBJ and set up a delicious top of the table clash between the Vikings and Jaguars on Wednesday night, 7:45 at House Park. Tickets are still available.

Vikings News · Lady Viks Make Historic Playoff Appearance Monday Night

This Monday, February 13th, the Lady Vikings of Lanier will make their first playoff appearance in over twenty years. A team filled with veterans and young talent has overcome the drought and laid the foundation for success for years to come. Precious Brewer and Zylann Wallace have been starters on the team for the past three seasons and their growth and development as players and as people has been instrumental in the success of the Viks. Brewer has proven herself as a dominant post in district 26-5A, leading the area in rebounds per game and averaging just under a double-double in points and boards. Wallace, who started on the varsity team as a defensive specialist, has become the most consistent transition scoring threat for the Viks. The leadership of these two young ladies cannot be overstated, nor can the emergence of a rising star. Erica Coleman came on the scene last year and made 1st team all district as a freshman. She has since become the backbone of the team, leading the way with 15.5 points per game.

The road to the playoffs has not been easy for the Viks. Just two weeks ago, the Viks lock-down defender Jada Stewart went down with a season ending injury to her left knee. Stewart was one of the engines for the Viks and losing her has been tough. However, her energy from the bench will still be critical to the spirit of the Viks in the playoff match-up. All the girls have poured their heart and soul into the team and the results reflect this. Whether you come out to see Maria Reyes’ turn-around mid-range jumper, Kadasia Duirden’s powerful finish in the lane, Aniah Edwards’ tight handle, or KeKe Christian’s three point “J,” we hope to see you there.

The Viks play Kerrville Tivy at Burger Center at 6pm. Don’t miss the action.
