On February 6th, the Lanier Viking Wrestling Team traveled to the Delco Center in to compete in the District 13 – 5A tournament. 2 Varsity boys and 6 Varsity girls competed in the tournament to try and earn their ticket to the regional tournament next week.
Number 4 seed in his weight class Senior Michael Naranjo started the Vikings off with a great win against Dripping Springs. Mike then fell to the District Champion from Glenn, but finished strong taking 4th securing his spot in Regionals after defeating McCallum and taking a tough loss against Lampasas. Rookie Keilan Roberts secured his spot in Regionals with tough losses against Dripping springs and Glenn. Both boys showed a lot of promise as they are wrestling to their full potential after a hard season and tough district competition.
The Lady Vikings were looking to reclaim the district title, but came up short, due to only having 6 of the 10 Varsity weight classes which led to giving up team points. Despite the missing weight classes, The Lady Vikings took 4th as a team losing to District Champions Leander Glenn, Lampasas, and Cedar Park yet defeating all AISD schools. Freshman Janet Rodriguez finished strong defeating Lampasas for 3rd place. Rookie Ezabella Solano wrestled tough matches and showed her grit wrestling above a weight class and for her first time on the mat taking 5th place. She surprised her opponent from Lampasas fighting hard not allowing the pin losing by tech fall. Junior Janie Nieto finished strong pinning her way to the championship round. She took 2nd place losing to another outstanding wrestler from Cedar Park. Senior rookie Ismary Montalvon worked hard catching Lampasas in a half-nelson securing her 3rd place with a 6 to 3 win. Senior Angie Miranda finished with 2nd place losing in the championship round against Glenn due to a shoulder injury that took her out of the match early. She wrestled strong in her first match of the day defeating Lampasas with a pin. Junior Sabrina Govea showed her strength as she came away with a 7-1 win in her consolation finals match against LBJ taking 3rd place. 4 out of 5 Lady Vikings earned their qualification for the regional tournament next week!
Overall the Coaches were very proud of each individual on this team, 8 Wrestlers were entered into the Varsity tournament, and 7 of them are regional qualifiers. They peaked at the right time and wrestled with heart and determination to continue the tradition of moving forward in the postseason. The Viking Wrestling team is focused on getting back on the mat in order to focus and prepare for the Regional Tournament next Friday, February 15th at the Delco Center.
