Boys Soccer put a halt to a 3 game skid by winning their district opener against Reagan 3-2. Josue Montalvan opened the scoring in the third minute by latching onto an inch-perfect through ball provided by Alex Luna, rounding the keeper, and slotting home into an empty net. Everything seemed to be going according to plan as Lanier dominated possession throughout the first half until a deep cross in the area led to a clumsy foul in the box and Reagan’s penalty taker was able to take advantage by lasering his spot kick into the side netting, leaving Ray Rodriguez no chance despite his dive in the correct direction.
The Vikings played on and it was Kevin Arce’s industry down the left side that earned Lanier a free kick near the corner flag. As the Blue Raiders prepared for a cross, Rodrigo Suarez chose instead to shoot from a nearly impossible angle and his curling effort found the top corner to put Lanier back ahead 2-1 before halftime.
In the 2nd half, it was Reagan that started more brightly and although they created few chances from open play, they were once again awarded a penalty, and once again the game was tied. The Vikings had twenty minutes to respond and try to go ahead a third time. Lanier began to ask more questions of the Reagan defense and a corner kick kept alive by Ricky Hernandez led to a goal-line scramble as Josue had a potential 2nd goal cleared off the line by a sliding defender before Mauricio Ulloa fired the rebound into the stands (his claims of a deflection were somehow rewarded with another corner kick). The decisive pass in the game came eventually from an unlikely source as Chris Torres’s looping diagonal ball found Josue in the box with still a lot of work left to do to score. As the keeper rushed out to smother, Josue took a sublime first touch with his chest to go around the keeper before producing a simple finish into an empty net with his 2nd touch.
In sub-varsity news, the JV team nearly pulled off a dramatic comeback against Reagan. The JV Vikings were caught cold early on and found themselves down 3-0 at the half. After the break, Coach Justin Marlin’s side was vastly improved, and two goals from freshman debutant Diego Stauffer were not quite enough to salvage a draw as the Vikings dropped a narrow 3-2 decision. In the JVB game, Coach German Zarate’s team rose to the occasion in their first district match. Miguel Balderas (2) and Christopher Albarran provided the goals in a 3-0 rout of Reagans JVB.
Both sub-varsity teams have had successful non-district seasons. JV pulled off wins over Austin High and Travis in the Copa Akins tournament to highlight their non-district campaign. The JVB (mostly 9th grade) Vikings have made a hugely impressive start to their high school careers pulling off huge wins over Vista Ridge, Westwood, Eastview, Austin High, Pflugerville, and Eastside Memorial. Their only loss of the season so far was a narrow 1-0 defeat in a weather-shortened tournament championship game against Marble Falls.
