Vikings News · Viking Wrestlers Show Their Potential at Craig T Grace Centex

This past weekend the Lanier Viking Wrestling team went to battle at the Craig T Grace Centex Tournament which included over 400 of the best 5A and 6A Wrestlers across the state.

Two Vikings and Seven Lady Vikings entered the tournament, David Gatari (106 lbs) and Keilan Roberts (120 lbs), Janie Nieto (102 lbs), Mahalia Goetz (119 lbs), Ismary Montavon (119 lbs), Joselin Ruiz (128 lbs), Angie Miranda (138 lbs), Sabrina Govea (148 lbs), and Victoria Strzesak. (165 lbs). The Lady Viks fought hard to gain 13th place out of 29 teams.

The Vikings were led by Senior Captain Angie Miranda (138 lbs) with a 3rd place finish.  Losing 3-4 to Smithson Valley (6A) who took 1st place. She showed great determination with a successful finish after battling through an ankle injury during her match against Smithson Valley in the Semi-finals.  She had yet another pin against district opponent from Glenn. Janie Nieto (102 lbs) took 5th place after pinning 3 of her opponents. Janie is showing that hard work pays off and is seeing results from her dedication.

Two boys entered the tournament to represent the Vikings, David Gatari and Keilan Roberts earned some much needed mat experience and wrestled good matches. Keilan showed great potential when forced with defending against a pin.  He had the whole gym watching and cheering him on when he came from behind 0 – 12 for a pin against Smithson Valley. Major upset!!

All around the team performed very well, they will come back to practice and continue to improve as we make the final stretch in preparation for the district tournament in February. Next the Vikings will take on a tough team of Leander Rouse and LBJ this Wednesday Jan. 9th.
