Vikings News · Boys Soccer Beats 2017 State Runner-Up

Final Score

Lanier 2 – 1 Waller

Goals: Juan Alvarez, Josue Maldonado

MOTM: Luis Lopez

Boys Soccer pulled off a come from behind 2-1 win over Waller High School in the Georgetown Tournament. This was an impressive scalp for the Vikings against a Houston-area program that has regularly advanced deep into the playoffs, finishing as State Runners-Up in 2017.

The game started poorly for Lanier as they conceded a disappointing goal from a long free kick in the 5th minute. An awkward bounce prevented Ray Rodriguez from handling cleanly, and the rebound fell in the path of an opportunistic Waller forward who could not miss from 3 yards.

The Vikings regrouped and kept their goal intact for the remainder of the first half. The second half started much more brightly for Lanier, and Juan Alvarez leveled the score at 1-1 with 30 drive into the top corner just ten minutes in. As time wound down in the second half at both sides seemed destined to settle for a draw, Luis Lopez picked up an errant backpass at midfield and dribbled at the Waller backline. With no option to pass, Lopez tried an audacious 30 yard effort of his own which the Goalkeeper was only just able to keep from crossing the line. Super Sub Josue Maldonado was first on the scene to slot away the rebound which the keeper was unable to secure in a wild goal mouth scramble.
