Vikings News · Viking Wrestling Off To Strong Start

Viking Wrestling is in full swing as our young Viking Wrestling team started on its path this season. The voyage to State started with a hard-fought loss to both the San Marcos Rattlers and McCallum Knights on last Wednesday, Nov 28th.

However, the Lady Vikings came back with a big win against the McCallum Knights 30-18.

Rookies Keilan Roberts (120 lbs), Samuel Diaz (182 lbs), Yordis Barrios (220 lbs), Lorena Castelan (102 lbs), and Returner Angie Miranda (138 lbs) came up with huge wins by Pin for the Vikings.

Even though Vikings wrestlers are a young team, they are determined to build their knowledge and team success.

The JV Boys showed up at the yearly Capital Classic Tournament ready to take some medals and that they did!

Returner Obed Vargas (108 lbs) earned a 2nd place medal with 3 straight pins and came up short in the finals against SA Johnson.

Rookie Kelian Roberts (120 lbs) earned a 3rd place medal after a tough loss against Anderson.

Rookie Eric Mervin ended with a 4th place medal after beating a strong opponent in our very own Viking… Rookie David Gatari.

Gatari had a strong win by pin against Georgetown.

And, Rookies Rico Byrd and Yordis Barrios both had tough matches and gained a lot of wrestling knowledge.

The Lady Viks had a difficult tournament starting with an injury to returner Angie Miranda.

Returner Sabrina Govea (148) came up short after having district opponent from Leander Rouse on her back and a great match with Steele.

Rookies Mahalia Goetz(119), Ismary Montalvon (128), Joseline Ruiz (138), and Yoana Devoa (165) fought hard but came up short as they show great potential toward a strong season.

The Vikings next competition is Wednesday, Dec. 5th against Austin, Travis and Reagan High schools at 7 pm.
