On February 7th, the Lanier Viking Wrestling Team traveled to Burger Center in order to compete in the District 14 – 5A tournament. 3 Varsity boys and 6 Varsity girls competed in the tournament to try and earn their ticket to the regional tournament next week.

Roderick was the favorite to earn the 1st place medal but was unable to finish due to his injury. Jesus Sierra cam up close to earning his way into regionals, but took a tough loss in the consolation semi finals. Overall Jesus wrestled his best matches all season and showed great toughness. 1st year wrestler Chris Solorzano shocked the district with his outstanding wrestling skills, after suffering a tough 3 point loss to the top seed in his weight class, Chris fought his way back through the consolation bracket and went on a win streak to finish 3rd place in the tournament. Chris showed a lot of promise as he finally is wrestling to his full potential and earned his way into the regional tournament in his first year of wrestling. Freshmen Obed Vargas Wrestled in the JV tournament and earned himself a 2nd place medal.
The Lady Vikings were looking to come reclaim their district title, but came up short due to only having 6 of the 10 Varsity weight classes which led to giving up team points. Returning State qualifier Isabella Llamas pinned her opponent in the championship match in style as she earned a 1st place medal. Leilah Jimenez wrestled tough matches and showed her grit in order to finish 4th in her weight class. Jamaria Washington pinned her opponent in the semi finals in an outstanding 30 seconds, but took a tough loss in the championship match vs another state ranked wrestler. Angie Miranda showed her determination and mental toughness by battling through a right shoulder injury that almost held her out in order to finish the tournament as the district champion in her weight class. Eboni Washington went up one weight class and showed her strength as she came away with a pin in her final match and earned the right to call herself a district champion. Koda Camarena made her way from the basketball court to show that she is a dual athlete and came away with a second place medal in her weight class. First year wrestler Sabrina Govea wrestled JV and won both of her matches by pin to finish in 1st place in the JV division. All of our Lady Vikings earned their qualification for the regional tournament next week.
