Last night the Lanier Viking Wrestling team hosted the Leander Glenn Grizzlies for our final home dual of the season.
The boys faced tough competition, Chris Solorzano, Obed Vargas, and Jesus Sierra all battled tough but came up short in their matches. Kelvin Medina wrestled in the first match of his career against one of the top ranked wrestlers in the state, but Kelvin did not back down and put up a fight. Senior Captain Roderick Ellison came out to get a win for the team after watching his teammates come up short, Roderick pinned his opponent in the second round to add another win to his stout record this season.
The Lady Vikings came out to defend their home mat and picked up a team win 29-15. Leilah Jimenez came out and put on a show, unfortunately her opponent defended tough and held on for a 3 point win at the end of all 3 rounds. Krista Hollins picked up a hand raise as she stepped foot on the mat for the first time all season. Jamaria Washington battled tough, she is focused on continuing to improve for the final stretch. Katherine Aguilar made her way from the soccer field onto the mat to pick up a stunning pin to help the overall team points. Koda Camarena earned a hand raise. Angie Miranda continued her dominant season and pinned her opponent in the first round to continue piling up the number in her wins column. Senior Isabella Llamas came out to please the crowd and continues to prove why she is ranked top 10 of 95 lbs wrestlers. She went up a weight class to take on an opponent 15 lbs heavier than her. That did not matter as Bella picked up a dominating victory and shut out her opponent to pick up a technical fall of 16-0.
The coaching staff was very proud of the team performance as we continue to take on tough opponents on our way to prepare for the district tournament next month.
The Vikings will travel to San Antonio this weekend to compete in the Russ Pedersen Invitational.
