This past weekend the Lanier Viking Wrestling team went to battle at the Craig T Grace Centex Tournament which included over 50 of the best 5A and 6A teams across the state.
Three boys entered the tournament to represent the Vikings, Jesus Sierra and Chris Solorzano earned some much needed mat experience and wrestled good matches. Jesus picked up a great win in his first match but fell short after reaching the quarter finals. Captain Roderick Ellison battled through a leg injury suffered in his first match to make it into the semi finals. Roderick wrestled well and did the best he could to finish with a 3-2 record on the weekend.
Four lady Vikings entered the tournament, Kyara Zacarias and Captain Leilah Jimenez wrestled tough competition and picked up a pair of wins each. Both ladies did very well despite their losses and showed something to build on in the coming weeks. Captain Angie Miranda showed grit to come from behind and get a pin in her first two matches to finish in 4th place out of 32 girls in her weight class. The coaching staff was very impressed with Angie’s determination despite the fact that she had taken some time off and showed signs of rust in her wrestling technique. Isabella Llamas proved why she is a former State qualifier and pinned all of her opponents on the way to the championship match. She took a tough loss against another returning state qualifier to finish 2nd in the tournament.
All around the team performed very well, they will come back to practice and continue to improve as we make the final stretch in preparation for the district tournament in February. Next the Vikings will take on a tough team of Leander Glenn this upcoming Wednesday, January 10th at 6:30pm at home.
