Vikings News · Viking Wrestling Off To A Great Start

This past weekend the Lanier Viking Wrestling team competed in the first tournament of the season at Capitol Classic; 37 of the region’s best 5A and 6A teams went to battle at the Delco Center Friday and Saturday.

The Viking boys kicked off the action on Friday and a lot of new Vikings got some much needed experience as they stepped on the mat for the very first time. They were led by Senior captain Roderick Ellison who had to wrestle JV due to the importance of taking his SAT’s on Saturday. He showed great leadership and finished perfect on the day with a first place medal. Freshmen Obed Vargas picked up his first win of his career.  Gerardo Almendarez came out strong winning his first two matches of the day.  Chris Solorzano, Jesus Sierra, Cesar Menchaca all battled tough and showed great attributes they can improve on.

Varsity and JV Girls action started Friday Night and continued throughout Saturday.

The Lady Vikings were led by Angie Miranda, Jamaria Washington, and Leilah Jimenez. Angie Miranda showed her determination as she dealt with the adversity of a fever and sore throat, but wrestled to a tough 4-1 record to finish 2nd in the tournament. Jamaria Washington finished 3-2 on the day, Leilah Jimenez was 2-2 as she wrestled up a weight class. Returning state qualifier Isabella Llamas advanced into the semifinals but was unable to finish the competition due to having to dominate her SAT test on Saturday morning. Janie Nieto, Angel Rangel, Yoana Denova, Katherine Aguilar, Koda Camarena, and Clarissa Cruz  all fought hard with at least 1 win each. It was a total team effort for the Lady Vikings as they look to build on their success.

The Viking Wrestling Program is just beginning their road to success and as a coaching staff we are very excited about the upcoming season!

We would appreciate your support to see the Vikings live in action this Wednesday @ Lanier High School, the match will begin at 7pm!
