If you have walked the halls of Lanier High School during the past four years you most likely have heard the name Maykel Naranjo. Some would describe Maykel as a good student, others as a great athlete, but all describe him as a great person! He is the outgoing socialite that many young adults aspire to be. In the eyes of adults, he is a model example of what a student-athlete should be.
During his time at Lanier, Maykel has earned 7 varsity letters in wrestling, cross country, and tennis. That is a feat in itself, but to top it off he has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.26 while participating in so many athletics. His academic success is highlighted by his 2 Viking Gold Academic Awards, 2017 Viking Valor Awards, and Viking Gold Student-Athlete of the Year nomination. Teachers at Lanier describe Maykel as: respectful, driven, hardworking, intellectual, and kind. When I see Mike I describe his as double threat! As successful as he’s been academically he brings the heat in athletics as well.
Maykel’s passion and best sport is wrestling. I have enjoyed the pleasure of coaching him his senior season. He has grown so much as an athlete and person. This year Maykel lead the wrestling team as one of our captains. For his leadership on and off the mat he was awarded the Craig Grace Leadership Award. During his senior season, Maykel finished with a 30-7 record, was a District Champion, and qualified for the State Finals for a second time. Maykel was “the man” this year as he took this young team under his wing and capped off a stellar wrestling career. In his career he finishes as a 4 x All District Wrestler, District Champion, 4 x Regional Qualifier, 2 x State Qualifier, and a career record of 85-35.
Maykel is far from done! He will continue his wrestling career next year at Hastings College in Nebraska. At Hastings College, he plans to study film and will wrestle for the Broncos at 125 lbs.
