Viking baseball showed true GRIT on Tuesday night grinding out a 10-9 extra inning victory on the road against a much improved Eastside Memorial squad. Ivan Pizano started for the Vikings on the mound going 3 1/3 innings surrendering just 1 earned run. With a sizable lead, the Vikings turned to Junior Luis Zayas who tossed 4 2/3 innings picking up the win in the 8th behind 7 strikeouts.
The Vikings never relented the lead in a game that saw a talented group of ESM hitters chip away over the last half of the game at a sizable Viking lead. Eastside would eventually knot the game in the bottom of the 7th at 9 all. The Vikings however were not deterred!
The Vikings showed great determination and focus staying the Eastside rally plating another run in the top of the first extra inning. This small cushion was tested in the bottom of the frame as Eastside would not go quietly. Ultimately, Zayas struck out the final two batters of the game to cap a gutsy and poised performance on the mound.
The Vikings and Eastside will return to action this Friday at Nelson Field 5 PM.
