Multiple Teams · Vikings have heart! Lanier qualifies for playoffs with 2nd half comeback

Lanier Boys Soccer pulled off a gutsy 3-2 comeback on Wednesday night over Travis to again prove that Vikings simply do not quit. Lanier came into the match looking to recover from its most difficult week of the season, having lost two matches in a row in a compressed 48 hour period to joint district leaders LBJ and Austin High. The unkind scheduling was compounded by injury and fatigue, but Lanier was resolved to rebound and end their first losing streak of the season at two games.

The match did not start well though as Lanier were caught in transition and Travis were ahead 1-0 before most of the capacity crowd had even taken their seats. Lanier settled down and controlled possession for the remainder of the half but could find no way through. The 2nd half began in an eerily similar fashion as Lanier were this time beaten on a set piece in the opening two minutes to fall behind 2-0.

This team has produced their best attacking displays in moments of desperation, and the final 37 minutes of this game were a prime example. The Vikings went on the front foot and took chances throwing numbers forward to find a way back into the game. The first goal came from a signature Mario Gomez corner, flicked on to the back post by Danny Vargas and then finished cleverly by Melvin Andrade to begin the comeback.

Later on it was Andres Zuniga who started a devastating counter attack by playing a split pass forward to Vargas. Danny switched the play to Edgar Mejia, who sold his defender to the middle before peeling away down the wing and then squaring the ball back to Vargas sprinting into the six yard box for the equalizer. With twenty minutes remaining, it was clear that there could be only one winner as Lanier continued to pour forward.

The winner came from another corner kick, this time taken by Mejia, helped on by Andrade, and finished with aplomb by the effervescent Shelove Dorsainvil. Man of the match honors were shared by the players causing havoc on the wings Mario Gomez and Edgar Mejia who were both heavily involved in most of the Lanier chances. The significance of the victory is that Lanier have officially qualified for the State Playoffs for the first time in several years. Current standings and video highlights are linked below.
