The Vikings plated 10 runs in home opener to defeat Hill Country by a score of 10-6 at Nelson field Tuesday night. After graduating 12 players last season, and returning only one varsity starter from last years squad the Vikings were looking to reload in their home opener at Nelson Field.
A dominating 5 inning performance by Junior right-hander Ivan Pizano led the Vikings to their first victory in the young season. Pizano set the tone with a stellar line of 7 K’s, 1 BB, 0 Hits and 0 Earned Runs.
Pizano’s efforts were rewarded as the Viking offense sprang to life collecting 10 hits on the night. Lead off batter Arhian Albis lead the offensive charge going 2-3 on the night , along with a pair of walks and 5 stolen bases. Marcos Heiman also produced a multi-hit game picking up a pair of RBI’s and 3 stolen bases. Catcher Melvin Garcia crushed a 2 run double into the right center gap extending the Viking lead.
The Vikings youth showed momentarily late in the game, however, they were able to close the door behind solid relief appearances from Luis Zayas and Andres Mendoza.
The Vikings will be back in action with a double-header Thursday at Nelson Field to open the AISD Tournament.
