This Monday, February 13th, the Lady Vikings of Lanier will make their first playoff appearance in over twenty years. A team filled with veterans and young talent has overcome the drought and laid the foundation for success for years to come. Precious Brewer and Zylann Wallace have been starters on the team for the past three seasons and their growth and development as players and as people has been instrumental in the success of the Viks. Brewer has proven herself as a dominant post in district 26-5A, leading the area in rebounds per game and averaging just under a double-double in points and boards. Wallace, who started on the varsity team as a defensive specialist, has become the most consistent transition scoring threat for the Viks. The leadership of these two young ladies cannot be overstated, nor can the emergence of a rising star. Erica Coleman came on the scene last year and made 1st team all district as a freshman. She has since become the backbone of the team, leading the way with 15.5 points per game.
The road to the playoffs has not been easy for the Viks. Just two weeks ago, the Viks lock-down defender Jada Stewart went down with a season ending injury to her left knee. Stewart was one of the engines for the Viks and losing her has been tough. However, her energy from the bench will still be critical to the spirit of the Viks in the playoff match-up. All the girls have poured their heart and soul into the team and the results reflect this. Whether you come out to see Maria Reyes’ turn-around mid-range jumper, Kadasia Duirden’s powerful finish in the lane, Aniah Edwards’ tight handle, or KeKe Christian’s three point “J,” we hope to see you there.
The Viks play Kerrville Tivy at Burger Center at 6pm. Don’t miss the action.
