Coed Junior Varsity Wrestling, Coed Varsity Wrestling · Lanier Wrestling 8th at Team State

This weekend the Lady Vikings traveled to Houston, Texas to participate in the 5A / 6A Girls Team State Duels. 16 of the state’s best girls team in all divisions were in attendance.

The Lady Vikings came into the contest undefeated on the seasons (11-0) and were seeking a high team state finish!

The Vikings wrestled (6A) Cypress Woods High School first. It was a good dual, a lot of back and forth in the matches. Isabella Llamas (95), Leilah Jiminez (110), Jasmine Byson (128), MJ Guerrera (138), Kyara Zacarias (148), and Selena Cordell (215) all picked up wins in the match. The Vikings prevailed over Cy-Woods 36-21.

In the second round of the tournament Lanier  wrestled 5A power Vista Ridge High School. The match started at 110 lbs weight class and the Lady Vikings came out on fire, winning 6 of the first 7 matches. In the match the Vikings bumped up, forcing a lot of girls to wrestle up a weight class. Leilah (110), Eboni (119), Jamaria (128), Jasmine (138), Angie (148), Katherine (185), and Selena (215) all picked up 6 point wins for the team. The Vikings dominated Vista Ridge by a final score of 48-12.

In the third round and last round of pool wrestling the Vikings squared off against Katy High School, a yearly 6A powerhouse! The Vikings battled tooth and nail, but the Tigers were too much. The Lady Vikings suffered their first loss of the year. Isabella (95) and Selena (215) picked up wins in the dual. Final Score 18-42.

The Ladies finished 2nd in their pool and qualified for the Silver Division (5th – 8th in the State). In the first crossover match the Viks wrestled (2x) 6A State Champions Cypress Ridge High School. Similar to the Katy dual, the Vikings battled, but inexperience overcame the Vikings. The dual finished with a score of 18-36. Isabella (95), Jamaria (119), and Selena (215) picked up wins in the dual.

In the last dual of the day the Vikings battled  6A Conroe Oakridge High School for 7th / 8th in the State. Oakridge came out with authority and the Lady Vikings were never able to gain any momentum. In the End, Isabella (95) and Selena (215) picked up the only two wins for the Vikings. Final Score 12-42.

All in all, the Ladies wrestled very tough! They came to Team State with big goals and aspirations. Although the Vikings did not reach their goal today they made a great showing. They came here to battle the best of the best and they didn’t back down from anyone. Coach Summerfield and Coach Banda spoke with the girls after the dual and said, “This was a great first step. Ya’ll put Lanier Wrestling back on the Map! We came here to win, although we did not win it all, we battled and we showed a lot of heart. The growth of this team is amazing. When you think that 7 of our 10 starters had not stepped on a wrestling mat until this September, it’s amazing how far these girls have come. This team will only graduate one starter this year, so BIG things are expected in the future! The SKY is the LIMIT! Very proud of these Lady Vikings!”
