Lanier beat perennial 5A soccer powerhouse Corpus Christi Calallen 2-0 on Thursday afternoon. Josue Maldonado and Cristhian Amador combined to provide the greatest threat early for Lanier down the right flank. But it was Edgar Mejia who played Melvin Andrade in behind the defense with an inch perfect ball through the center 30 minutes in. Melvin produced an ice cold finish by calmly rounded the keeper and casually slotting home to give Lanier a 1-0 lead at the break.
The 2nd half was very competitive as Andres Zuniga battled in midfield and ran the game for Lanier to earn Man of the Match honors. Michael Varela, Jediael Oxlaj, and Luis Martinez put in an outstanding shift in central defense to keep Calallen quiet. Lanier was holding on though as the clock ran down when Danny Vargas ran onto a long ball from Juan Carlos Hernandez and beat the onrushing keeper near post to close out an impressive 2-0 win.
The Vikings followed up with another strong performance against 6A Anderson High School on Friday morning. Melvin Andrade’s left foot rocket broke the stalemate in the 78th minute to give the Vikings a 1-0 win. Henrry Orantes earned man of the match honors for electrifying the midfield, while Felix Santana earned a 2nd clean sheet for the Vikings in goal with the help of Josue Maldonado’s goal line clearance in the final minute of play. The pair of results will likely qualify Lanier for a 3rd place or 5th place match on Saturday morning.
