The Lanier varsity tennis team competed in their first spring tournament on Friday, against surrounding Austin schools. The team played tennis for almost 9 hours in some beautiful, but rather hot weather. Each of our singles players played best two out of three sets (a minimum of 30 minute) for each match of the tournament and the doubles teams played a proset of eight.
Rodrigo Paquot had some amazing and extremely long matches throughout the day. Rodrigo won his first match against McCallum, then Crockett, and Travis. He played in the finals against another McCallum player to finish off the tournament in second place. Our number two boys singles player, Miguel Terrero, lost his first match against Akins, but that didn’t stop him from wanting more. Miguel powered through and ended up winning the consolation bracket for boys singles.
Cynthia Morales played three matches before facing Ashley Luna-Berrones, our girls two singles player in the finals. In the end it was a great win for girls singles, with Cynthia placing first in the tournament and Ashley placing second in the tournament.
Our boys number one doubles team, Jeorqui Diaz and Ricardo Martinez were smooth sailing, winning four matches before they played McCallum in the finals. The boys placed second in the tournament for boys doubles. Our girls one doubles team, Miyuky Avila and Nayeli Mejia, had a successful day advancing to the semi-finals, but ended up loosing in a close scoring match to miss out on the finals.
Overall, we are extremely proud of the team coming home with six medals from their first tournament.
